General Flatware Questions

- What is Stainless Steel?
Stainless steel is an alloy of raw steel and various other elements which reduce the degree of discoloration and/or rusting found in ordinary/raw steel. In flatware, almost all of the steel used in the highest quality products is composed of a minimum of 18% Chrome and 8% Nickel. The Chrome aids in reduction of rusting or spotting and the Nickel imparts color and luster to the finished product. This alloy, often referred to as either 18/8 OR 18/10 is known to metallurgists as 304 Stainless Steel. Another alloy used for moderate priced flatware is known as 18/0 or 18 Chrome Stainless Steel. It has 18% Chrome but no Nickel content. Thus it has a slightly different color, not normally obvious to the eye. Very inexpensive, promotional flatware is normally made of 13/0 or 13 Chrome Stainless Steel. This alloy is much less expensive and the product has a greater tendency to discolor, rust and pit. All Yamazaki Stainless Steel Flatware is made of either 18/8 or 18/0 Stainless Steel.
- What are the most common Flatware items?
Most of the flatware services used in the home have 5 pieces used for eating – a Fork and Knife, a Salad Fork and a Spoon or Place Spoon and a Teaspoon. Many people add Serving Pieces to their sets. Yamazaki offers an assortment of Serving Pieces in most of our patterns including Tablespoons, Pierced Tablespoons, Serving/Meat Forks, Sugar Spoons and Butter Knives. Several of our patterns also have Gravy Ladles, Pastry Servers and Large Serving Forks and Spoons.
- Why don’t the knives on Yamazaki Flatware patterns have serrated edges?
Yamazaki makes the knife blades in our flatware patterns using a “High Carbon” stainless steel to take and maintain a sharp cutting edge. Some companies use a “softer” steel that will dull over time. To make the blade in this lower grade steel last longer, a serrated edge is sometimes added to these knife blades.
- Why are there so many different prices for Stainless Steel Flatware?
As with many products, flatware prices are the result of raw materials and costs of production. Higher priced flatware is typically made from more costly “18/8 or 18/10” stainless steel adding to its’ overall durability and carefree nature. Also, many higher priced flatware patterns like those offered from Yamazaki are more sculptural in nature with noticeable differences in the “thickness” and comfort of handles, combined with an aesthetically pleasing “thinness” in their spoons, tines and blades that add immeasurably to dining pleasure as opposed to some of the “stamped” and noticeably uncomfortable lower priced patterns in the market. Finally, Yamazaki product is hand finished, hand polished and completely inspected before it is offered to the consumer, representing an excellent value for superior product.
Flatware Care & Use

- How do I keep my Stainless Steel Flatware looking like new?
Stainless Steel means that the product “stains less” than ordinary steel. While is it extremely tough and durable, it is not “stain proof.” The best way to keep you flatware looking like new is to wash it as soon after use as possible. Rinsing your flatware before putting it into a dishwasher is of great help in removing food particles that may cause spotting. Also, some food stuffs with high sulfur content like mayonnaise or eggs can mar the steel. Flatware that has been used with these products should be washed as soon as possible to reduce any discoloration that might occur. Finally, you can purchase various stainless steel cleaners/polishes at your local supermarket that will easily remove most discoloration that might occur. All flatware will show tiny scratched surfaces after months/years of use. These marks, referred to a patina, are considered an enhancement of the product, softening the surface and adding the personal feeling to the flatware.
- Can my Yamazaki Stainless Steel go into the dishwasher?
A simple answer, yes, all Yamazaki Flatware has been designed to provide a lifetime of carefree service. We also recommend that your flatware be rinsed prior to placing in the dishwasher, and that a good quality non-lemon based dishwashing detergent be used, as the acidic properties of some lemon dishwashing detergents can stain the steel. We also recommend that you try to keep the blades of the knives from hitting the handles of the other pieces as the agitation can cause the blades to mark the handles. Finally, we recommend that you towel dry the flatware rather than permitting the flatware to go through the high heat drying cycle. While the flatware can “stand the heat”, any food particles that do not get rinsed away in the dish washer may bake on with the drying heat.
